Full Biography

Nathaniel Philip Victor James Rothschild was born in London on 12 July 1971. He is the only son of the late financier Jacob Rothschild, 4th Baron Rothschild, and Serena Mary Rothschild, Baroness Rothschild. The Rothschild Archive identifies him as the youngest of their four children.

His paternal lineage goes back through the British Rothschild banking family to Nathan Mayer Rothschild, who established the family's major banking operation in London in the early nineteenth century.

Nat's father, Jacob, became one of Britain's most prominent investment financiers. Rather than simply entering his father's investment organization, however, Nat developed an independent career in international finance.

After university, he worked in investment management and mergers and acquisitions before becoming a senior figure at Atticus Capital, a hedge-fund management company. His work there gave him extensive experience in global investment and helped establish his reputation independently of the Rothschild family name.

He later became involved in emerging-market investment and natural resources, including mining and energy. He founded or chaired investment vehicles and companies involved in these sectors and became associated with major international investors and entrepreneurs.

One of his most publicized ventures was Vallar plc, a London-listed investment vehicle that raised substantial capital to acquire mining assets in emerging markets. Vallar subsequently became associated with the Indonesian coal businesses that formed Bumi plc.

Nat has also held corporate positions in Barrick Gold, Vivarte, and Volex. The Rothschild Archive records that he joined Volex in 2015 and later became its Executive Chairman, with his investment company NR Holdings Ltd becoming its largest shareholder.

In February 2024, his father died at age 87. Nat consequently inherited the historic title 5th Baron Rothschild.

Early Life

Nat grew up in Britain within an extremely prominent financial family.

His childhood was influenced by his father's career as an investment banker and financier. Jacob Rothschild had separated from the traditional family bank, N M Rothschild & Sons, in 1980 and subsequently built a highly successful career through investment management and the development of RIT Capital Partners.

Nat therefore grew up around international finance, investment and business.

He was the only male child among Jacob and Serena's four children. His sisters are:

Hannah Mary Rothschild
Beth Matilda Rothschild
Emily Magda Rothschild.

The family also had a strong connection with the arts, philanthropy and British high society.

Family Background

Father — Jacob Rothschild

His father was Nathaniel Charles Jacob Rothschild, 4th Baron Rothschild (1936–2024).

Jacob was a prominent British investment banker and financier. He worked for the family's bank early in his career but left in 1980 following a disagreement within the family business. He subsequently became an important figure in investment management and was chairman of RIT Capital Partners.

Jacob's death on 26 February 2024 resulted in Nat inheriting the barony.

Mother — Serena Rothschild

His mother was Serena Mary Rothschild (née Dunn), daughter of British-Canadian financier Sir James Dunn. Serena was also involved in philanthropy and British social and cultural life.

Sisters

Nat has three sisters:

Hannah Mary Rothschild
Beth Matilda Rothschild
Emily Magda Rothschild.
Rothschild lineage

Nat belongs to the British branch of the Rothschild family descended from Nathan Mayer Rothschild (1777–1836), the founder of the London branch of the family's nineteenth-century banking network.

The Rothschild Archive's genealogy places Nat as the eighth generation in that lineage.

Education

Nat received his early education at Colet Court and later attended Eton College, one of Britain's most prominent independent schools.

He subsequently attended Wadham College, Oxford, where he studied history. The Rothschild Archive records his Oxford education and later appointment as a Foundation Fellow of Wadham College in 2018.

His education was therefore primarily in the humanities rather than economics or finance. His financial expertise was developed largely through his subsequent professional career.

Career

Early financial career

Nat began his professional career in the financial sector in the 1990s.

He worked at Lazard Brothers Asset Management in London and subsequently at Gleacher Partners, a New York-based mergers and acquisitions advisory firm.

These positions gave him experience in investment management and corporate finance.

Atticus Capital

One of his most important early positions was at Atticus Capital, an international hedge-fund manager.

He became co-chairman of Atticus Capital and remained associated with the organization until its dissolution in 2009.

During this period, he developed a reputation as an international investor and developed extensive relationships with institutional investors and business leaders.

JNR Limited

Nat subsequently chaired JNR Limited, an investment advisory company focused particularly on:

Emerging markets
Metals
Mining
Natural resources

The Rothschild Archive describes JNR as one of his principal investment businesses.

Bumi / Vallar

Nat became heavily involved in natural resources through Vallar plc, an investment vehicle established to acquire mining assets.

Vallar raised approximately £707 million in its 2010 London IPO and subsequently pursued major Indonesian coal investments. The resulting business became associated with Bumi plc.

Nat served as co-chairman of Bumi plc.

The venture became controversial because of disputes among shareholders and Indonesian business partners, eventually leading to major restructuring.

Vivarte

Nat also served as chairman of Vivarte, a major French retail group associated with brands including Kookai.

Barrick Gold

Between 2010 and 2013, Nat served as a director of Barrick Gold Corporation, one of the world's major gold-mining companies.

Volex

Another major part of his more recent corporate career has been Volex plc, a UK-listed manufacturer of electronic and electrical products.

He joined Volex in 2015 and subsequently became Executive Chairman. Through NR Holdings Ltd, his investment company, he became Volex's largest shareholder.

Business Activities

Nat's business interests have been considerably broader than traditional Rothschild banking.

Investment management

His career has included hedge funds, private investments and investment advisory businesses.

Emerging markets

He has been particularly interested in emerging markets, where he has invested in businesses and natural-resource projects.

Mining and natural resources

Mining has been one of his most prominent areas of investment, including:

Coal
Gold
Metals
Mining companies
Natural-resource projects

His involvement with JNR, Vallar, Bumi and Barrick Gold illustrates this concentration.

Industrial businesses

His role at Volex represents a move beyond pure finance and natural resources into industrial manufacturing.

Historical Context

Nat's career belongs to a very different era from that of the original Rothschild bankers.

The traditional Rothschild banking dynasty

The original Rothschild banking network was built in the nineteenth century by Mayer Amschel Rothschild and his five sons.

By Nat's generation, the family's business activities had diversified significantly.

From banking to investment management

Nat's father, Jacob, was part of a generation that moved increasingly toward investment management and asset management, rather than relying exclusively on the traditional family banking house.

Nat continued this evolution.

His career in hedge funds, private investments, mining and industrial companies represents the transformation of the family's financial interests into a modern, diversified investment model.

Globalization

Nat's career also reflects the globalization of finance during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.

His investments have involved businesses and markets across:

Britain
United States
Europe
Indonesia
Eastern Europe
Other emerging markets

His involvement with Bumi, for example, connected London capital markets with Indonesian natural resources.

Succession of the barony

A major historical event in his personal life occurred in 2024, when his father died.

Nat subsequently became the 5th Baron Rothschild. The title was originally created in 1885 for Nathan Mayer Rothschild, making Nat the latest holder in a line that extends across five generations of the British Rothschild family.

Personal Life

Nat married Iona Annabelle Neilson in 1995; the marriage ended in divorce. He later married Loretta Basey in 2016.

He has generally maintained a relatively private personal life compared with the intense public attention sometimes directed toward members of the Rothschild family.

He has been associated with Britain, Switzerland and international business circles, and has held multiple citizenships according to public biographical sources. His professional activities have required extensive international travel and involvement in global investment markets.

Following his father's death in 2024, he became the 5th Baron Rothschild. He is therefore both a prominent international financier and the current holder of one of the best-known hereditary titles associated with the Rothschild family.
